30 Nov 2011
Margaret Christine Selland passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the age of 94 years.
Margaret was the eldest child of seven born to John and Olga Ness in the family farm house at Plainview, SK on November 25, 1917. Her brother Ben was born 13 months later. They went to Plainview School from grades 1 through 8, always being together in the same grade. She was a help to her mother in raising the other five siblings; she later began working for other families as a “hired girl”. Milking cows at a dairy was another job. Her last “hired girl” job was in the Success School district where an eligible bachelor named Eddy Selland lived. They were married on June 16, 1944 and were soon blessed with two children, Roy and Betty. Living on the farm required hard work without the modern conveniences of electricity and indoor plumbing; she loved gardening and especially grew beautiful tomatoes and could also grow watermelons. In 1985 Eddy’s declining health required a move to the Heritage House apartments. In 1988, when Eddy was hospitalized, Margaret faithfully made daily trips to feed and visit him until his passing in 1990. Margaret then focussed on continued involvement in her church work, the Thrift Store, and being a “responder” to several residents. A health issue in 2004 required her to move to St. Paul Lutheran Home where she passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 30. Her days were filled with socializing with staff, residents, family and friends, writing amazing letters and sending cards to many and taking part in all the activities offered, especially those which demonstrated her artistic talent.
Margaret is survived with love by her son, Roy (Janice) Selland; her daughter, Betty Parr; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Kevin (Brandi Ottenbreit) Selland, Vienna and Erik; Keith Selland; Mark (Danielle) Parr, Freddie and Gordie; Chad Parr (Brenda Dryer, Kristen and Jayden), Carena and Jeremy Dean; her siblings Sylvia Nelson and Gordon (Freda) Ness; sisters-in-law Nancy Ness, Pearl Ness, Evelyn Ness and Lillie Berg; numerous nieces and nephews and many amazing neighbours and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Olga Ness; her husband, Eddy Selland; son-in-law Calvin Parr; siblings Ben, Leon and Omar Ness, and Ella Spearey; nephews Glen Nelson and Ken Berg and niece Donna Ness; brothers-in-law Gilbert Nelson, Bob Spearey, Gilbert Selland (Irene), Henry Selland (Vivian) and Gus Berg.
