Obituary for
Elroy Arlin Litzenberger ( )
LITZENBERGER, Elroy Arlin of Neudorf, Saskatchewan passed away on November 23, 2014 at the age of 88 years. Elroy was born August 10, 1926 to Jacob and Amalie (nee Hupp) Litzenberger. Elroy was their only child. He married Evelyn (nee Krieger) on November 30, 1950 and they were blessed with three children: Rhoda, Patty (died in infancy) and Brian.
Elroy was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Amalie Litzenberger and one infant daughter. He is survived by his wife Evelyn, daughter Rhoda (Keith) Seidler and their children Aaron (Regan) Seidler, Allison (Ryan) Wirth, Lindsay Seidler and Matthew Seidler; son Brian (Patty nee Leier) Litzenberger and their children Treighton, Brendan and Brooklyn; and great grandchildren, Kiera, Talia and Max Seidler and Keegan Wirth.
Elroy attended Neudorf School until Grade 8 and then went to farm with his Dad. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church on April 6, 1941. Elroy took over the family farm in November 1950 after he and Evelyn were married. He operated a very small farm growing wheat and oats and kept a few cattle, a horse and chickens. For many years, Elroy and Evelyn sold cream, eggs, and chickens. At one point, Elroy decided to diversify the farm by buying chinchillas. While this did not turn out to be a good venture, Elroy never faltered and continued to try new things.
Elroy was very active in the community. He volunteered on numerous boards and committees, including the Community Hall Board, the minor ball and golf club associations and acted as deacon at the church. For many years, Elroy could also be found cutting the grass on the Neudorf Golf Course and sports grounds. Elroy was named Citizen of the Year in 1994 in recognition of his many years as a volunteer for the golf club, minor sports, winter sports and Parks and Recreation.
Elroy and Evelyn loved to dance and spent many years attending polkafests and going to dances at the lake on Saturday nights and some Sunday afternoons in Melville. Elroy also went on a few bus trips to visit casinos in Shooting Star and Winnipeg. He loved to golf, and one of his favourite pastimes was buying lottery tickets in the hopes of winning big.
Elroy was a very social person and loved celebrating birthdays, playing cards and visiting with relatives and friends. He was always happiest when surrounded by those he loved.
Elroy was a craftsman and carpenter, having built his own house in the 1960s and all of the buildings on the farm. He crafted wood carvings of silhouettes that are presently found at the Neudorf golf course. He was a talented welder and was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbours to fix broken equipment. He loved and was especially proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He took every opportunity to watch them play hockey or ball and loved to spend time visiting with them or tinkering around the farm together.
In July of 2013, he and Evelyn moved to Neudorf, but Elroy would still make daily trips back out to the farm. He entered the hospital in August 2014 and was moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home on November 3, 2014. He passed away on November 23, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Elroy was loved and will be missed.
