Obituary for David Lawrence Read

David Lawrence Read
Dave Read of Melville passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the age of 63 years.

Dave Lawrence was born January 25, 1951 in Yorkton, SK to Kenneth and Mildred Read (Watson). He spent his childhood years in various parts of Saskatchewan, including Melville and Yorkton, but it was in Regina that he gained his true city boy status. Being the youngest boy in the family, he had a lot of catching up to do. His older sisters have and can share many stories of a little Dave trying to grow up quickly so he could get into trouble with his older brothers. There were many years of mischief and fun had by Dave, a talented young mechanic who loved fast cars, a good party and pretty ladies. There was never a shortage of any of these things until he found his true passion in life - Glenda.

Dave met Glenda while he was helping a good friend with a little bit of mechanics. She was their babysitter, and it was love at first sight. The two dated for a short time and quickly realized that there was no other person on this earth for one another and were married on October 7, 1972. The couple moved to Saskatoon to start their family. That December their first son Corey was born. The couple didn’t have much but they made do with what they had. Dave was so proud of Corey; although he didn’t express it, you could tell by the sparkle in his eyes when he talked about him that Corey was his pride and joy. Shortly before Corey’s first birthday, the family moved back to Melville in order to be closer to friends and family. Dave was always a hard worker. He never left his family without and was always too proud to ask for help. He spent many late nights and weekends working in the snowmobile shop to provide for his family. Four years later they announced the birth of their second son Sean. Overnight their little family doubled in size and so did the love they had for their children. Life was busy with two growing boys, but that did not slow them down. There were many family camping trips up north, baseball games and family outings at the Kormos farm.

Although the family was busy and full of love, there was something that Dave was missing. He desperately wanted a baby girl, and after eight years of pleading with Glenda, his wish came true, and the family welcomed Megan into the world. Family was the most important thing in the world to Dave, and he showed this every single day of his life.

A few years after Sean was born, Dave took a job in the yard with the railroad. His hardworking personality and his perseverance to provide for his family allowed him to work his way up to the running crew as an engineer. This is where he worked through the rest of his career until the love of his life fell ill and needed to be cared for. There was no question for Dave, when his wife needed him he was there. It was during this time that Dave and Glenda had the opportunity to welcome the most important people into their lives, their grandchildren. Calla, Lucy and Nixon were the light of Grandpa’s life. There was not a thing that he wouldn’t have done for his grandkids, and they knew it. After his wife passed away, Dave filled his days with his grandkids and could often be seen driving Calla and Lucy to and from school or beaming while telling someone about Nixon’s newest trick on his scooter or bike.

In earlier years Dave loved to hunt and fish and spent many trips doing these things with his buddies, nephews and brothers. He spent many years down at the lake with his family. This was his reward for all of his hard work and the way he showed his family he cared. Everyone was always welcome at the cabin or in his home. He loved to take family and friends out on the boat and pulled many people tubing, skiing and knee boarding. He was an amazing husband and father, the best grandpa and a great friend. If you knew Dave, then he liked you. He was a reserved man that only showed his heart to the people that he truly loved.

Dave was predeceased by his son Sean Everett Read; his wife Glenda Read; his parents Ken Read, Mildred Read Watson, Clarence Watson; his mother and father-in-law Paul and Bessie Pittlik; his brothers Ken Read, Craig Read, Richard Read; his sister-in-law Ruth Read and brothers-in-law, Joseph Ward, Steve Kormos. Left to celebrate his life are his children and their families, Corey (Jaime) Read and their son Nixon of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK and Megan (Darcy) Almasi and their two daughters Calla and Lucy of Melville, SK; his sisters Nancy (Ralph) Drummond of Edmonton, AB, Elizabeth-Lynn (Ron) Cameron of Yorkton, SK, Lorraine Tretiak of Winnipeg, MB, Shirley (Leo) Read-Josephson of Saskatoon, SK, Roberta (Robert) Read-Rohr of Melville, SK; his sisters-in-law Sharon Ward of Springside, SK, Pauline Ward of Melville, SK, Ellenor Kormos of Melville, SK, and Jewel (Joe) Middlemas of Canora, SK; along with numerous family members, extended family and many friends who he would have thought of as family.
