Elmer Edwin Schick passed away peacefully with family by his side at the age of 91 years.

Elmer was born February 13, 1923 to Adam and Maria (nee Neuls) Schick on his grandparents’ farm near Duff. He was the second of eight children. At the age of four, the family moved to their farm near Finnie. He attended Southview School, two miles north of the farm, until he completed Grade 8. In 1941, Elmer was called to serve his country, but at that time, his father was not healthy so he was excused to stay home and help at the farm. When his dad passed away in 1943, Elmer continued to help his mom run the family farm and support his brothers and sisters. In the winter of 1946-1947, Elmer went to Toronto to work at Canada Wire & Cable Company. He saved $800, enough to purchase his first car, and returned home to the farm in the spring of 1947.

Elmer met Martha Berner during his school years. They were married October 5, 1947. Elmer’s mother moved to Duff with his younger siblings, and Elmer and Martha stayed on the farm that they rented from his mother. They were blessed with five children – Barry, Garth, Timothy, Vincent, and finally a daughter, Heather. During their younger years, Elmer and Martha spent many hours square dancing. Elmer was an avid curler. He helped build the first curling rink in the district of Finnie; it was built from straw bales. He continued to curl right up until the age of 86. Elmer loved sports, whether it was curling, ball games or golf. He attended many sports days and curling bonspiels, either playing or proudly cheering on his children. Elmer was a dedicated trapper and sold many pelts to make a little extra money for the family. He also loved hunting and fishing. He was very involved in 4-H; he became assistant leader and showed cattle with his sons, winning a Grand Champion title.

Elmer loved to farm. He was a John Deere man through and through. He was very proud of all his accomplishments on the farm. Elmer and Martha remained on the farm until they retired in 1994 and moved to Melville in May of 1995. Elmer’s children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. They always brought a smile to his face and a glimmer to his eye. He will be remembered for being a kind and gentle man. He treated everyone fairly and never judged. He always had time for EVERYONE. Elmer and Martha moved to the Melville Legion Manor in 2010. When his health was failing in 2012, Elmer moved into St. Paul Lutheran Home. At times, Elmer’s dementia challenged his caregivers. We thank God for those fabulous people who helped him through those difficult times. Elmer remained in St. Paul until God called him home on December 12, 2014.

Elmer was predeceased by his parents, Adam and Maria (nee Neuls) Schick; his sisters, Isabella Schick, Phyllis Berner, Florence Frick, Doris Wall; a brother, David Schick; and a brother-in-law, Louis Berner. He is survived by his wife Martha; son Barry (Kim) Schick of Victoria, BC; granddaughter Nancy (Ron) Bastien; great-granddaughter, Alicia Macmillan and great-great-granddaughter, Abigail; great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Bastien; great-grandson, Tyler Bastien; grandson Scott (Christie) Schick; great-granddaughters, Taylor and Lawson Schick; son Garth (Karen) Schick of Rosetown, SK; grandsons, Jeremy and Derek Schick; granddaughter, Kayla (Jordan) Edgerton; great-grandsons Braxton and Connor; son Tim (Arlene) Schick of Beausejour, MB; grandsons Chad (Kailey McKenty) Schick and Dustin (Kristina Manaigre) Schick; granddaughter Kelsey (Tyson) Price; great-granddaughter Arianna; son Vincent (Jennifer) Schick of Melville, SK; granddaughter Avery (Zach Wang) Schick; grandson Michael Schick; daughter Heather Molnar of Melville, SK; grandsons Mason (Ashley Smith) Molnar and Austin (Kara Rokosh) Molnar; granddaughter Janaye Molnar; his brother Wilfred (Millie) Schick of Regina; his sister Violet Murray of Mission, BC; two brothers-in-law, Ed Frick of Melville and Norman Wall of Regina; sister-in-law, Anne Thompson of Regina, as well as numerous other relatives.
