Obituary for
Albert Edward Hollinger
Albert was born March 23, 1920 on the family farm and was baptized Albert Edward Hollinger on May 2, 1920 at Zion Lutheran Church, south of Neudorf, by Rev. Richer. He was confirmed in the same church on March 25, 1934. He went to Ulmer School until grade eight and then stayed home to help on the farm. For spending money in the winter he chopped wood and hauled it to town.
Albert met the love of his life, Irene, in 1939. Shortly after, in fall of 1941, he was called to service in the army; he and Irene announced their engagement prior to his deployment. During his four years in the army, he was stationed in Regina, Winnipeg, Halifax, Victoria, Prince Rupert and Alaska. In 1945 he was sent overseas to England on the Dutch ship “Nieuw Amsterdam”. He trained in England for six weeks and saw many areas of Europe but spent most of his time in Holland with the Regina Rifles 3rd Division. On May 10, 1945, WWII cease fire was declared. Albert didn’t leave Europe until shortly before Christmas 1945 aboard the “Queen Elizabeth” ship. He arrived back in Canada on New Year’s Eve. He was discharged in February 1946. Albert married Irene Waldbauer on June 8, 1946 and then took over his father-in-law’s farm in 1947 in the Killaly district. He served 15 years on Christ Lutheran Church council in Neudorf, three years on St. Paul’s Lutheran Church council in Melville, ten years on the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Board in Killaly, a few years on the telephone board and a few years on the Snowflake School Board.
In March of 1977, Albert and Irene retired to Melville and sold the farm to his nephew Larry Hollinger. After retiring Albert and Irene spent time travelling the United States and Canada by motorhome, car and bus. They spent winters travelling in Arizona, Mexico, and Texas, as well as many other areas of the United States. Albert loved working in the yard and garden, enjoyed fishing, playing pool, camping and spending time with family. He had a great sense of humour and loved to tease. On August 8, 2001, his wife and best friend Irene passed away. In 2004 he sold his house and moved into a suite. In 2007 he moved into St. Philomena Manor where he lived for seven years and had many cherished memories and friends. In late fall of 2014, Albert’s mobility began to fail, and he moved to Esterhazy Centennial Special Care Home on December 10, 2014. He remained there until his passing on February 22, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Esterhazy after a very brief illness. He will be sadly missed.
Albert was predeceased by his wife Irene; parents Jacob and Maria (Schick) Hollinger; an infant daughter, Gloria; his sister Lizzie and her husband Jake Ulmer, brother John and wife Evelyn, sister Katie and husband Ed Schutz, sister Eleanor and husband Ernie Keller, brother Jake, sister Clara Cyca and sister Yvonne Hudson; nephews Mervin Hollinger, Clifford Schutz, Gary Schutz, Wesley Hudson, Eldon Keller, Kelly Hollinger, Dean Hollinger, Lonnie Skiftun and Sherwin Hollinger.
