Obituary for
Dorothy Mabel Wastrodowski (Wells)
Dorothy was born January 17, 1926 to James and Louisa Wells and was the eldest of the family with four younger brothers for whom she helped care. Dorothy grew up and attended school in Bartley, Southampton Hampshire, England during the pre- and WWII eras. As a young woman, Dorothy worked as an inspectress in a munitions factory in the heart of the New Forest. Her job was to make sure that fighter jet parts were accurate within 1000th of an inch. Not only was the work stressful and tiring, but the factory itself was a constant target for enemy fire. Dorothy was lucky enough to have escaped death numerous times during the war. It was during this tumultuous time that Dorothy met Peter Wastrodowski during his service overseas with the 3rd Canadian Division Signals. They married June 19, 1945.
Once the war ended, Dorothy immigrated to Canada on the Aquitania as passenger #44627, landing in Halifax in August 1946. After being reunited with her Canadian husband in Kandahar, Saskatchewan, they spent the winter of 1946-1947 in Geraldton, Ontario. They moved to Saskatchewan in June of 1947 to live and work in Yorkton.
On April 5, 1949, they moved to a farm in the Waldron district, which they obtained through the Veterans Land Act. Dorothy and Peter farmed for 30 years before being forced to retire due to Peter’s poor health. They sold all but 10 acres of the homestead, where Dorothy lived until her passing.
In 1975, Dorothy was one of the founding members of the War Brides Association of Saskatchewan, a non-profit organization where the minoritized group of War Brides could seek refuge. In addition, she was an active member and former Grand Sister in the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, curling, baking and helping out in the community.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents James and Louisa Wells, loving husband Peter, and brothers, Derek and Donald.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son Glenn Wastrodowski; her daughter Sylvia (Lorne) Dycer of Saskatoon; three grandchildren Tracy Dycer (fiancé Chad Turberfield), Sara Dycer and Kaitlin Dycer, all of Saskatoon; two brothers Alan (Maggie) Wells of Dibden, England and Ron (Phyllis) Wells of Langley, England; and numerous other family members and good friends.
