Obituary for
Myrita Gladys Huhtala (Selin)
Myrita was born on October 7,1922 in the New Stockholm district to John Adolph and Ruth (Nicholauson) Selin, the eldest of four children.
Myrita went to New Stockholm rural school and took Grades 11 and 12 in Stockholm High School. After graduating from Regina Normal School in 1941, she taught in a rural one-room school for 23½ years. In 1967, she taught in Corning School (Grades 5 and 6) for one year, then she taught Grade 4 and later Grade 3 in Whitewood Elementary School for 10½ years. After completing 35 years of teaching, she superannuated December 31,1978. She taught for many years at Vacation Bible School and Sunday School in the New Stockholm Lutheran Church.
In 1977 Myrita married Willard Huhtala from the New Finland District, where they lived and farmed until Willard’s death in 2000; she then later moved to Whitewood.
In 2003,she married Mel Bowman from Whitewood. The two of them enjoyed cross-country skiing together, which Mel said she was very good at. Mel and Myrita played and sang in the Pleasant Company Singers. They travelled to senior homes to entertain the elderly. She enjoyed her Sunday church services and visiting with family and friends. “Myrita’s” company was enjoyed by all.
Myrita began struggling with health issues in 2011 and spent the last years in long-term care living. Mel visited and comforted his “Miss Myrita” until the end of her life.
Myrita went peacefully in her sleep September 2, 2015. She leaves behind to mourn her husband Mel Bowman, sister Marion Koch, nephews and nieces and a large loving family of in-laws, cousins and friends. She will be fondly remembered for kindness and her witty personality. May God be with you till we meet again.
