Obituary for
Joy M. Hudy (Schoffer)
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joy M. Hudy on Monday, February 8, 2016. Joy was born in Melville May 15, 1928.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: daughter Marsha (Darryl) McCallum, son Darryl (Gwen) Hudy, granddaughter Sara (Kevin) McCleod and their children Fiona and Carys, grandson Steven (Melissa) Hudy and their children Jack and Blake, her brothers Don (Shirley) Schoffer and Charles (Jean) Schoffer and sister Marilyn (Lawrence) Hartle and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Steve, her parents Peter and Mary (Minarowich) Schoffer, her sisters Audrey Henschel, Pat Wilson, Shirley Sparling and Jean Jones, her brother Les Schoffer and her son-in-law Gerald Newmeyer, along with broths-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Joy was baptised and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and later joined Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, served at their teas and was proud to see her daughter-in-law Gwen serve on council at the same church.
Joy worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Truman, and in 1949, married Steve Hudy. She stopped working to raise her two children but returned to work in the 70s at St. Paul Lutheran Home. She retired in 1988 due to failing health.
Joy spent most of her summers at Crooked Lake. She swam like a fish but took adult swimming lessons when she realized she had two children who were fearless in the water. Joy and Steve were avid bowlers and golfers; she served as chair for the Melville's Ladies’ Golf League. She loved the courses throughout Saskatchewan and in North and South Dakota, but Last Oak, in the Qu’Appelle Valley, was always her favourite. Joy was a prolific oil painter, was a proud member of the Melville Art Club, and took great pleasure in seeing her paintings hanging in the hallways of SPLH. Persistent hand tremors caused her to retire from painting, but it didn't stop her from playing cards, collecting coins and reading. Both her children have memory books of events and activities from their early school days, but the scrapbooks she kept for her grandchildren Sara and Steven are remarkable. She documented their progress through school, noted every award they ever won and carefully pasted pictures and articles that traced their early years in Melville. She knew they would be more than a lovely gift but a true reflection of her love for them both.
So many people made a huge effort to see Joy and write to her in the past few years. Her family would like to thank each and every one. We would also like to thank Kim Rutzki and her Palliative care team and the staff at St. Paul Lutheran Home. Be assured your devotion and commitment to care does not go unnoticed, and we will be forever grateful for your thoughtfulness and compassion.
