Obituary for David Broda

Dave Anthony Broda was born in Melville to Anton (Tony) and Mary (nee Slobodzian) Broda on August 13, 1946. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church. He attended Wymer School, graduated from St. Henry’s High School and went on to tech school in Saskatoon.

Farming and sports were Dave’s greatest loves. He smiled from spring until fall with farming and all winter with curling, with baseball in between seasons. He was fortunate enough to have gone to St. Louis twice to watch his beloved Cardinals and got to see games in San Diego and Anaheim. The Montreal Canadiens were always #1 one to him.

Dave attended curling Briers from the East Coast to the West Coast. He was a director with the Saskatchewan Curling Association and Executive Council Member of Region 5. His own curling took him across Saskatchewan and even into the U.S.A. Attending curling venues was very special to him. In later years, he even mastered the stick!

Dave played ball with the Wallacetown B’s and the Killaly Athletics, where there was a lot of beer and many great games. He was a member of the Robert G. Combe VC Royal Canadian Legion #61 for 37 years, where he helped with bingo whenever called upon.

Dave and Karin led a very busy life, visiting their children in Las Vegas, NV, and Sicamous, BC. Dave loved flowers and always gave flowers to Karin on every special occasion, and sometimes for no reason at all! The yard at the farm was a flowery heaven. Dave loved coming to the salon and teasing the daylights out of the women; they looked for him when he wasn’t there.

Dave and Karin were married on October 12, 2013. When they came home from the First Continental Cup in Las Vegas, Dave was diagnosed with cancer. From his treatments, he developed lewy body dementia. On November 13, 2015, he entered St. Paul Lutheran Home, where he passed away peacefully on Friday, December 7, 2018, with his loving wife and family by his side.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Mary Broda, and his beloved dog, Rocky. He will always be loved and remembered by his wife Karin; stepsons Todd (Nadine) of Las Vegas, NV, and Jarett of Sicamous, BC; grandsons Josh, Evan and William; sister Marion (Tom) Reed of Edmonton, AB; brother Garry (Elaine) of Calgary, AB; sister Bernadette (Walter) LeBouef of Meadow Lake; brother Artie (Pat) of Melville; brother Tony (Laurie) of Grayson; brother Richard of Wadena; brother Shawn (Tracey) of Ft. Kent, AB; brothers-in-law Les (Lorraine) Rathgeber of Crooked Lake and Larry Rathgeber of Melville; godchild Amanda Reed; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
