Obituary for Dorothy Beatrice Lutz (Schick)

Dorothy Beatrice Lutz (Schick)
Dorothy Beatrice was born to Ben and Elsie Schick on April 8, 1937 in Neudorf, SK. Her mom was a teacher, so she spent many days at Ulmer School with her mom, even though she really wasn't old enough to attend. At age three her family moved to Regina as her dad worked for PFRA and her mom continued to teach. She told us many times how she rode the bus alone to attend kindergarten and primary grades in her early school years.

They moved to the family farm in the Duff area, and on her 8th birthday, her only sister Darlene was born. Dorothy grew up on the farm and spent some of the winter months living in Duff with her grandmother so she could attend school. Upon graduation, she attended Teachers College in Moose Jaw and then returned home to teach at Garden School, and later, at Duff School.

On July 14, 1960 she married Clarence Lutz, and together they farmed with his parents and then his brother Bruce and nephew Jason in later years. Dorothy continued to teach until their first daughter, Leanne Joy, arrived in 1964. When Joanne Faith arrived in 1966, their family was complete. Once her daughters started school she returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher but spent most of her time raising her family and working on the farm. Anyone who knew her can attest to the hours she spent in her garden, as the area between the rows was more like concrete than dirt from her frequent footsteps.

Dorothy spent many hours curling with Sharon, Shirley and Marlene, and camping with friends and family, but the most fun she had was dancing, polka fests, and more dancing. Her daughters grew and eventually married, and thus her greatest passions were created. Grandma and Grandpa never missed an event of their grandchildren, unless of course if it was on “dancing night”. Whitney always joked that they had a more active social life than she did. They attended countless hockey games, ball games, music recitals, dance performances and drama productions; some better than others but they always received Grandma’s abundant praise and her classic comment, “good for you”.

After many years of farming, they sold the farm in 2007 and moved to condo living in Regina as she always made Clarence promise she wouldn't have to cut grass in her retirement, and this way they were closer to the dances and the wonderful friends they danced with. They were fortunate to share many winter vacations with family and friends, including destinations to Hawaii, Czech Republic, Mexico, Cuba, and Jamaica. One very special vacation was when she took her entire family to Disneyland.

Clarence became ill and passed away in 2009. Dorothy remained in their condo in Regina until her health failed and then, even with great friends in Regina, it became a struggle to manage on her own. She moved to Caleb Village in Melville in February of 2014. This proved to be a great experience, as she was able to rekindle old friendships and creates many more new ones. As her health further deteriorated she was forced to move to St. Paul Lutheran Home in December of 2014. In her final chapter she enjoyed the curling games, church services and especially the dancing until her passing on March 14, 2015.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Elsie Schick, her in-laws Peter and Minnie Lutz and her husband, Clarence. She leaves to cherish fond memories: her daughters, Leanne (Larry) Hollinger and Joanne (Trent) Daunheimer; grandchildren Whitney (Jeremy) Scheirer, Justin Hollinger, Shelby Hollinger, Janelle Daunheimer and Matthew Daunheimer; great- grandchildren Carter and Jaida Scheirer; her only sister Darlene (Bruce) Lutz, sister-in-law Betty (Larry) Ukrainetz; three nieces Wendy (Brian) Napady, Becky (Mike)Arno, Shannon (Pat) Begrand, and two nephews Jason (Janna) Lutz and Brett (Alexis) Ukrainetz; and great- nieces and nephews, Jayden and Kierra Napady, Garrett and Sara Lutz and Jacey and Haley Arno.
