The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Bertha Hildebrandt can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

From: Miles and Janelle Porath
Albert Porath, born and raised on a farm in Bakerville, Wisconsin, first arrived in Piney in 1914. He homesteaded on a quarter section of land. NE 1/4 of section 10, Township 2, Range 11E. The piece of land he chose was completely covered with a heavy stand of timber, mostly pine and poplar. Albert stayed with his brother Joe, who lived1/2 mile west, until he competed his log cabin. Albert spent one winter there cutting timber for sale. He went back to the States where he found work on the Soo Line Railroad in Thief River Falls. There he met and married Esther Larson in 1916. The following year they moved back to the homestead where they proceeded to carve a farm out of the timberland. In 1924 Albert organized a group of neighbors and built a one room schoolhouse adjacent to the farm. They called it Wintergreen School. One teacher taught all grades one to eight. Albert served as secretary-treasurer on the school board for many years. The Porath's (sic) spent the winter cutting cord-wood, box-wood, railway ties, etc. for sale to supplement the farm income (mixed farming). They also raised sheep. Esther spun wool and knitted socks and mitts. Albert and Esther raised 12 children: Kathleen Dunham of Winnipeg; Bertha Hildebrandt of Mellville Saskatchewan; Alvin Porath of West Hawk Lake, Manitoba; Lars Porath of Grandview, Manitoba; twins Doris Mushaluk of Prince George, B.C. and Eileen Dixon of Winnipeg; Grace Town of Winnipeg; Neil Porath deceased in 1954; Garry Porath of Winnipeg; Janice Fillion of Winnipeg; and Donna Kaul of Winnipeg.
